Twitter, the blue bird social network, announced the launch of a feature known as “superfollow”.

The new paid “superfollows” feature allows users to charge followers for access to exclusive content. It also gives Twitter netizens the ability to create and join groups based on specific interests.

How does Superfollow work?

The Superfollow feature will allow users to charge for additional, exclusive material that their regular followers will not see. This can include newsletters, videos, offers and discounts exclusive to subscribers.

Users would pay a monthly subscription fee to access the additional content. Subscriptions will also allow Twitter to access a wider range of revenue streams.

The feature echoes paid-for creator platforms such as Patreon, similar features created by Facebook and YouTube. Twitter wants to double its revenue from $3.7 billion in 2020 to $7.5 billion by 2023.

What do we expect from Superfollow?

Twitter has declined to reveal too many details as there is still no launch date for the new feature. It is already clear that it will focus on exclusivity in order to bring better content to subscribers.

Features of the new feature include a new badge called the supporter badge. This badge can be earned by supporting a Twitter account through another new “subscription” feature.

There has also been no comment on the estimated cost of the subscription, but in one of the images posted we can see the monthly cost of USD 4.99 (approx. €4.12).

Twitter commented: “Exploring audience funding opportunities like Super Follows will allow creators and publishers to receive direct support from their audience and incentivise them to continue creating content that their audience will love”.

Upcoming Twitter features

“Community”

The social network Twitter also announced a new feature called “communities”, which appears to be its version much like Facebook’s “groups”. Users can create and join groups around specific interests, allowing them to see more tweets focused on those topics.

Not to forget, Facebook’s “groups” feature was a huge success for the social network, so it could be a particularly useful tool on Twitter, as the open nature of the service can make it difficult for new users to get started on the platform.

“Revue and Twitter Spaces”

Another new feature to be launched by Twitter is “Revue”, which will allow people to publish free or paid newsletters to their audiences.

There is also “Twitter Spaces”, which is a competitor to the clubhouse, allowing users to participate in audio chats. It is currently in a private Beta test, which means it is not yet open to the general Twitter audience.

“Safety mode”

Twitter is also said to be developing a feature called “safe mode” that will block potentially harmful tweets.

According to reports, the feature will “automatically block accounts that appear in Twitter’s rules and mute silent accounts that may use insults, name-calling, vulgar language or hate speech,” when activated, the company revealed at an analyst event.

This prevents related accounts from posting tweets on Twitter for seven consecutive days.
