Thanks to Google Assistant’s unstoppable integration with WhatsApp, it has been possible for a year now to send and listen to WhatsApp text messages via voice commands. Recently, voice messages can also be sent via voice commands, making this form of hands-free messaging a reality.

It was in August 2020 that Google Assistant implemented voice messaging in English and Brazilian Portuguese, but the Spanish feature was at least a year away. Now it seems that the implementation in this language is imminent, let’s take a look at the commands that can be used.

How to send a voice message with the Google Assistant

There are several ways to send voice messages using Google Assistant. Here are some of the voice commands that can be used:

  • “Hi Google, send a voice message”: the Assistant will ask for the name of the contact, their phone number and whether you want to send the voice message by SMS or WhatsApp. Finally, it will ask for the content of the message.
  • “Hi Google, send a WhatsApp voice message”: in this case, the assistant will only ask for the contact to start recording the audio message.
  • “Hi Google, send a WhatsApp voice message to [contact]”: this starts recording the WhatsApp voice message directly to the contact we have specifically indicated.

Since Google Assistant allows for some variations, these voice actions can also be performed using other words, such as ‘Ok Google, send WhatsApp message by voice’. Similarly, the words ‘audio message’ or ‘audio note’ could be used instead of voice message.

The Google Assistant will automatically stop recording the audio message as soon as you stop speaking. It will then ask if you want to send the message, re-record it or delete it. To listen to the voice message, simply press the player manually.

Can it be used on any device?

First of all, it is necessary to verify that the device has Google Assistant and activate it. Both requirements are easy to fulfil as the Android voice assistant is available for all devices launched after 2015 and is already activated by default.

However, it can be verified by going into ‘Settings’, choosing the ‘Google Assistant’ option and activating it if it is turned off.

Once the virtual assistant is ready, the command can be given to send a WhatsApp voice note using the aforementioned commands.
