Within market marketing, segmentation refers to the method by which potential customers are divided into differentiated groups. With this technique, companies manage to personalize their messages by sending them to the correct audiences. It is a very effective strategy as it helps you get to know your customers better and specify the common characteristics they have. When a segmentation is correct, it gives us the opportunity to offer products or services that are of interest to consumers. It is essential that any company know all audiences in detail in order to manage specific actions for each segment, increasing their effectiveness.

Types of segmentation

There are several types of segmentation, below we show you the most common:

  • Demographic segmentation. It is one of the most important because it allows us to know very specific details of the users. The more we specify the easier it will be to obtain potential clients. Within the demographic segmentation we find variables such as; age, sex, profession, marital status, nationality, etc …
  • Geographical segmentation. Taking into account its name, we can get an idea of what type of segmentation it is, specifically it refers to the geographical location of the users. The variables that belong to this type of segment would be; country, city and region among others.
  • Psychographic segmentation. With this third type we will know the psychological peculiarities of the users. Within its variables we find; attitudes, interests, personality, lifestyle, etc …
  • Behavioral segmentation. Knowing the behavior of users we can further define our product or service before putting it on sale. The variables that we can find are those that refer to the consumption and use patterns that Internet users have. We can also define loyalty to the brand and sensitivity to price.
  • Industrial segmentation. With this segmentation we can get to know how many companies are dedicating themselves to the same as ours and what products or services they are offering. It will help us to know the sector in which we are operating and we can offer our product to be competitive.
  • Segmentation by product. Segmentation by product is what provides us with specific aspects about it. In other words, if we have pants, for example, we can segment into jeans, corduroy, tweezers, chinos, etc … The more specific the segmentation, the more options we will have to reach the right person.
