The live video app Periscope’s days are numbered: Twitter has announced that it will close in March 2021.  The reasons behind this decision? According to the social network, the plummeting number of users in recent years has left the Periscope application in a state of unsustainable maintenance. And apparently, this decline has been dragging on for some time.

Twitter acquired this application in 2015, and according to its forecasts, the cost of maintaining it would increase over time. In view of the results, the microblogging social network issued a statement in December 2020 to announce the closure of the application.

Promising start

In 2015, Twitter bought the application independently, in order to offer users the possibility of live video streaming with their mobile phones. These video recordings became available for playback live or within 24 hours of being recorded.

Each time the user made a broadcast, their followers were alerted with a notification on their device. And when accessing the video, they could participate with their live comments, or indicate that they liked it by sending hearts. Users could also choose the accessibility of their broadcasts, limiting access to a limited number of followers if they so wished.

A progressive and inevitable takeover

When Periscope burst onto the scene with its functions in 2015, it actually had a time of success that did not go unnoticed. But it was the Twitter app itself that began to gradually integrate Periscope’s functions with services such as Twitter Live. Periscope’s destiny was clear: to become a shooting star that could be dispensed with.

Shortly after Twitter announced the closure of Periscope, it was no longer possible to create new accounts on the app. In March 2021 it will no longer be available in online shops, but until then it will be possible for users to download a copy of videos and data for safekeeping.
