The aperture is the hole in the camera through which the light that reaches the sensor passes and is regulated by the diaphragm. The diaphragm is any lens and is made up of a series of blades that move inward or outward creating a circle. This circle may be larger or smaller, whether it is made towards the center or towards the outside. More or less amount of light will pass through it depending on its diameter. In other words, when the blades are open, the camera sensor captures more light. On the contrary, as the blades gradually close, the light that will reach the sensor will be less. Three fundamental characteristics of photography are regulated with the aperture.

  1. Amount of light reaching the sensor.
  2. Depth of field size.
  3. Sharpness of images.

What are aperture f numbers

f is a reference value that tells us how open or closed the diaphragm aperture is on a camera lens. Commonly in diaphragm aperture these f-numbers follow a sequence like the one shown below:

f/1.4, f / 2, f /2.8, f / 4, f /5.6, f / 8, f / 11, f / 16, f / 22

To understand the values indicated by the f-numbers of the diaphragm aperture, we will take into account the following inverse rule.

  • The lower the f value, the greater the amount of light will enter the target
  • The higher the f value, the less light will enter the lens.
