Currently, the use of the hashtag is common in almost all social networks. A trend that began on Twitter on August 23, 14 years ago, soon became popular and spread to other platforms.
It all started on August 23, 2007. Chris Messina, a Twitter user, suggested, in a post, using the pound symbol to group the content of that social network in an orderly manner. The proposal caught on to the point that, today, an average of 125 million hashtags are written per day.
Over the years, the use of this resource has grown. Becoming a regular on other social networks such as Instagram, LinkedIn or YouTube. Other networks, such as Facebook, have also tried to implement it.
The massive growth of this resource shows that the hashtag’s function to rank trends has greatly facilitated the development of social networks.
International Hashtag Day
Coinciding with the anniversary of Chris Messina’s proposal, since 2018, every August 23rd the International Hashtag Day is celebrated.
During this year’s celebration, to celebrate its impact on the important conversations and building communities that bring millions of people around the world together, Twitter has released a new emoji for #HashtagDay, #HashtagDay. It will be available throughout the day, allowing people from all over the planet to join in the conversations.
And you, do you use a lot of hashtags?
