There are two types of people in the blogger world: those who decide to make their blog using the WordPress platform and those who do it with Blogger. Which one is better? The answer will depend exclusively on the needs of each author. Therefore, it doesn’t matter what your neighbor or best friend recommends, what matters is that you are clear about what is best for YOUR blog and how far your technical knowledge goes to develop it.

BLOGGER

  • Blogger is a free service from Google. It was born with the intention of being easy for beginners while not being too restrictive for advanced bloggers.
  • It is a completely free tool, with no charges of any kind
  • Your template designer is very easy to use and you don’t need to know anything about HTML or CSS code but there are not so many to choose from and they are more limited
  • Only a maximum of static pages can be created
  • You can add gadgets and organize them through a simple interface
  • Does not display ads
  • Allows you to monetize it (such as through Google Adsense)
  • It integrates seamlessly with other Google services such as Google Friend Connect and Feedburner. Let’s not forget that belonging to Google is getting a very good positioning almost instantly since it is the most used search engine in Spain with 95%.
  • It does not have a responsive design (adapted to mobiles and tablets) as worked as WordPress, it does not allow you to visualize the statistics, for example.
  • Its commenting system is quite cumbersome and sometimes it hurts in the interaction with users

WORDPRESS

We must take into account that when we talk about WordPress we must consider two versions: WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

WordPress.com

WordPress.com is designed for people who want to create a blog quickly and easily, without having to worry about hosting and customization issues.

  • It’s easy to use
  • It allows you to have a free web hosting
  • You can use a custom domain name that is paid for by an annual subscription
  • You have a large number of templates to choose from but don’t allow too much customization.
  • It does not allow editing of the PHP source code and therefore no plugins can be installed. It also doesn’t allow you to use Javascript.
  • It allows you more authoring possibilities
  • You can choose from a lot of widgets (gadgets) to add to your blog
  • The software is automatically updated
  • Sometimes displays advertising without notice
  • Does not allow you to monetize it (only in some very specific cases)

WordPress.org

WordPress.org presents itself as the best possibility for people with technical knowledge, who want full control over their blog, and who are willing to pay for web hosting.

  • This software is free, open source, and free although you have to pay for the web hosting service (monthly or yearly subscriptions)
  • There is a wide range of paid themes/templates or “premium themes”. There is also the possibility to upload your own design as a template.
  • You have full control over all aspects of your blog (PHP,CSS,plugins, widgets, etc…).
  • Using a WordPress.org blog will not display ads that are not yours
  • You can monetize and monetize it any way you want, with Adsense, Groupon,DoubleClick,Infolinks and any other.
  • It has a wide variety of widgets to add, almost always free or with a free version.
  • You have more possibilities regarding authors than in Blogger.
  • The platform is so versatile that it allows you to use it to create blogs, but also websites using it as a CMS mainly.
  • The software is updated manually
  • Allows to make backups
  • Once you know what the most important functions are for you and your blog, you can choose the platform that suits you best.

In any case, if you finally make the wrong choice, there are ways to migrate from one platform to another. It is not 100% reliable because sometimes components can be lost along the way, but it is not impossible either.

Good luck with your choice!

Soñadora e idealista pero con los pies en el suelo y con una visión muy clara de la realidad. Quizás sea toda una paradoja en sí misma que traduce en una insana curiosidad por todo lo que la rodea.
